I tried a recipe. It was full of promise. Delicious, healthy chocolate icing it said. Easy to make. Four ingredients. Two steps. When it was ready it looked fabulous. It smelled heavenly. So I dipped my finger in and gave it a taste. It was awful!
How could something so appealing be so bad? I would never have guessed it would be if I hadn’t tasted it. All of my other senses were easily deceived into thinking it would be sweet. But my tastebuds weren’t.
Could that be why the Lord encourages us to “taste and see” that He is good? We can’t be deceived if we have tasted. We know He is good when we have seen His goodness play out in our lives.
In the end I made something simpler. Something tried and true and known to be delicious. A whole wheat bagel drizzled with honey.
In life I return again and again to God and His word. It’s tried and true. I have tasted and know that He is good.
Taste and see that the Lord is good;
blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
Psalm 34:8

This is a good post. I’ll say that I war within myself a tendency to think God only as good as I view His current performance…which is a big reason I’m making efforts in recording His faithfulness. Then I can read back at any time and remember how He’s shown up in the past: often in ways I couldn’t appreciate at the time. David did that again and again.

Interesting analogy. We can certainly be fooled by looking and smelling. Tasting makes the difference. It’s so true. God and His Word are tried and true.
Thank you for sharing on Spiritual Sundays.
Blessings,
Charlotte

“Thy words were good and I did eat them and they were the joy and rejoicing of mine heart.” This just made me smile, thankful I have tasted of the Lord and His Word. He’s spoiled me for anything fake.
