The Modern And The Old Fashioned

“Are we going to our mall or to a new mall,” asked Grande.

“We are going to our mall,” I answered.

“Yeah!!!  I like our mall.  There’s lots of books!”

“Oh, you want to go to the bookstore?”

“Yes!”

And I smile and sigh contentedly about how my son is so smart that he readily chooses the book store over the video game store.

We watched a hockey practice, ate some frozen yogurt and ended at the bookstore.  Our copy of “Goodnight Moon” had fallen apart a few months ago and my boys and I were missing reading it each night.  So I picked up a copy of it and then saw a similar book titled “Goodnight iPad.”  We read through it and it was quite funny.  But when it came time to leave, the book that made it into our bag was the original, the classic, the old fashioned, “Goodnight Moon.”

While the modern version was funny the old fashioned one supports the values and lifestyle I want to instill in my boys.

To often our modern culture discards classic truths and values as being old fashioned and out of date.  If we live in agreement with modern culture we will often find ourselves turning our backs on Biblical truths and closing our ears to the voice and wisdom of the Holy Spirit.  Culture will tell you that God and faith are old fashioned.  It will offer you a life of sin and openminded acceptance, but it’s a life that leads to death.

As I find myself walking the road of faith in Christ I find myself choosing the old fashioned over the modern time and time again.

Just to clarify.  I love modern technology.  It’s the modern worldview I object to.  I will continue to read my Bible on my iPhone and look for recipes on Pinterest.

By the way, our new book has already been chewed on.  Thanks Chico!  LOL

Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

I, too, find myself preferring the old fashion over the new as far as representing our family values. I enjoyed your perspective ;)
