The Tie That Binds

I tied them together.  I thought they would play tug of war, but they just didn’t understand why they would pull against each other.  After all they are cousins and friends.  Why would they compete when they would rather work together.  So they invented their own game, shaking the rope while Grande jumped over it.

We can be bound to people much in the same way Mediano and his cousin were tied together.  And what a difference it makes who we are tied to.

Are we bound to our friends or our enemies?

Are we pulling against each other or working together, each seeking the best for the other?

And most importantly, are we bound to God?

Then they bound themselves in a covenant to seek God, the God of their fathers, wholeheartedly, holding nothing back.

The whole country felt good about the covenant promise-they had given their promise joyfully from the heart. Anticipating the best, they had sought God-and he showed up, ready to be found. God gave them peace within and without-a most peaceable kingdom!

Pee Pee In The Potty

It’s time for Mediano to get out of diapers.  I’m ready for it.  But he is not.  He refuses.  Just the idea of going potty can upset him.

But Chico is all for potty training!  Every time he hears the word potty he grabs his diaper says “pee pee, pee pee” and heads for the bathroom.  The first day he actually went pee pee twice in the potty!

And Mediano is still not interested.

It reminds me of 1 Timothy 4:12, and how the young can be an example.  So what do we do when someone who is “younger” in age or faith seems to surpass us.  If the young shouldn’t let others put them down, shouldn’t we as mature Christians be careful not to put them down?

It’s easy to feel threatened or jealous of their success when we see someone with less experience who does more or better than we do.  Or to judge them as novices who don’t know what life is really like.  But often times the truth is that the young in spirit take God at his word more easily.  They can trust and believe because they have not yet failed in their faith.

You see maturity comes not only with success, but also with failures.  And those failures can cause us to doubt if we let them.  But when we remember that the failures we have lived through were ours, not God’s, we will be able to appreciate, encourage, and even learn from the young.

And in that we can trust again, fervently like we did in the youth of our first love for Christ.

Let’s allow the young in Christ to remind of us His abundant grace and goodness.

And don’t let anyone put you down because you’re young. Teach believers with your life: by word, by demeanor, by love, by faith, by integrity.

1 Timothy 4:12

A Walk With A Friend

Chico has a friend.  He’s faithful.  He’s fluffy.  He has big teeth.  He’s a stuffed dinosaur.  Perfect for hugging.

Chico carries him around the house, in the car, and to the mailbox.  He seems to enjoy himself more when his dino is with him.  He’s good company.

Good company makes the walk enjoyable.  Good company makes you smile and laugh along the way.  Good company encourages you when your tired, and even picks you up when you fall.

Good company is what the Lord has for each of us.  He’s the Spirit who is also a friend.  He’s our guide and our travel companion.  And I wouldn’t want to walk through life without him.

But when the Friend comes, the Spirit of the Truth, he will take you by the hand and guide you into all the truth there is. He won’t draw attention to himself, but will make sense out of what is about to happen and, indeed, out of all that I have done and said.

Passport to the World Review

Have you been wondering how to introduce your child to geography?  Are you looking for something that not only teaches them how to read a map, but also about the people and cultures that inhabit those places?  I’ve got the book for you.

My boys and I have been enjoying Passport to the World by Craig Froman.  It’s a Biblical introduction to our world that’s perfect for elementary children or earlier.  So far my boys’ favorite country is Turkey.  They just seem to think that’s a funny name and they burst into giggles when they hear it.  They also love to look at the world map and ask me where their house, their friends house, the park, the store, etc. is.  They just don’t understand why I point to the same spot on the map each time.

They’ll understand more in a few years and will love filling their own passports with stamps from all the countries they learn about.  This book would also be great for older students and can be paired with their own internet or library research on each country.

So check out Passport to the World!  It will make a great addition to your library.

Water

I used to drink tap water.  I wasn’t picky.  I drank tap water at home, at work, and at restaurants.  I even drank water from the tap in Mexico.  Water was just water to me.

But then I got married and my husband drinks bottled water.  Not just any bottled water though.  He drinks a certain brand of bottled water.  So I started to drink it too.  And all the sudden I no longer like tap water.  The water we drink has spoiled me for all other water.  I even give it to my boys.

In some ways I think it’s similar to the living water Jesus offers.  Once you try it you’ll be spoiled for anything else.  Once you know the one true God, everything else becomes a cheap imitation.  Because His Spirit fills us and refills us again and again.  Because in Him we find both the meaning and purpose of life.  Because He is all we will ever need and better than anything we could ever find.

We want nothing else.

Have you drunk the living water?

Is that fountain flowing inside you?

Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again and again.  Anyone who drinks the water I give will never thirst-not ever. The water I give will be an artesian spring within, gushing fountains of endless life.”

The woman said, “Sir, give me this water so I won’t ever get thirsty, won’t ever have to come back to this well again!”

Up High

This makes me nervous.  Grande’s getting bigger, more daring, and more able.  He climbs where there’s no side rails.  And doesn’t stop until he’s made it to the top.  Then he turns around and comes back down the same way.

So I run over ready to catch him if he falls.  And my stomach is in knots.  I look up.  Snap a picture.  And realize.

He’s made for this.  He’s made to dwell in the heights.  To be set high above.  To live a life high in praise, fame and honor.  To be set apart and holy.

And I can’t spend my life waiting, expecting him to fall.  When I know he is made to stand up high.

And today God has reaffirmed that you are dearly held treasure just as he promised, a people entrusted with keeping his commandments, a people set high above all other nations that he’s made, high in praise, fame, and honor: you’re a people holy to God, your God. That’s what he has promised.

Deuteronomy 26:18-19

He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;
he causes me to stand on the heights.

Fortress

The Lord is my fortress.  In Him I trust.  The war can be raging all around me, but I’m inside.  I’m safe.  I’m calm.  I’m joyful.

The same joy that’s on Mediano’s face is the joy and confidence we can have in the midst of the troubles the world sends our way when we abide in the Lord.

Breath in His presence.  Pray continuously.  Meditate on His Word.  Listen to His voice.  Rest in His love.

Abide in Him.

And you will be safe in His shelter.

The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

Psalm 18:2

God’s angel sets up a circle of protection around us while we pray.

Psalm 34:7
